Indent is an annual literary print journal based at Staffordshire University’s Creative Writing Department, Stoke-on-Trent.

Lisa Mansell and Paul Houghton are the general editors, and the editorial team comprises of Creative Writing undergraduates, post graduates and alumni.

Submissions are considered ‘blind’ through an editorial board.

We publish during June, and submissions are open from January-April.

We are looking for work that is evocative and provocative: bold, original, innovative writing that is as fresh as an electric shock: short stories, poems, cultural reviews and occasional essays.

The work needs to be wholly contemporary and we are looking for writing that is poetic and artistic as opposed to commercially-minded: fiction with an arresting writing style, strength of characterisation, sharp visualisation, unusual settings, storylines and concepts. For poetry we want to see a rich use of language. Innovatory typographical presentation is welcome.

The world is a strange place if you look under the surface and we want writers to look at it unflinchingly, sometimes humorously and always with a distinct point-of-view. In any given issue we would aim to present a sharp dose of surrealism, a bark of humour, realism as harsh as a galvanised bucket; writing that is alternately light, dark, political and lyrical.

PROSE 500 words to 3,000 maximum [Word documents only]
Manuscripts must be double spaced, page-numbered and edited to a professional standard.
POEMS Three to six poems maximum [PDF or Word document]

Sumbissions will reopen in December 2012.

We’re working on it in the next couple of months. We have an exciting new website to launch too, so please keep posted. It will be before the close of the year and we can’t wait.

Are you still accepting poetry submissions for the next issue ? Are these any limits to number of lines or style
